Anup Vatti by Vanessa Tang

Anup Vatti is a normal 13-year old, who has lived all his life in Sacramento, with parents who are a civil engineer and a doctor and an older brother who’s now at college.
In his free time, he watches movies and TV. Sci-fi is his favorite genre, which includes movies like Inception. In a toss up between Star Trek and Star War, he’d pick the latter. The scariest movie he’s ever seen is Disturbia, but he wants to see The Orphan. Anup doesn’t play much video games anymore since his brother took their Xbox to college and broke it. As for TV, he watches A Thousand Ways to Die and Criminal Minds. Other than watching movies and shows, he listens to alternative rock music.
At school, Anup takes Spanish 2 and Yearbook, along with his regular IB classes. He chose Yearbook as his elective because of all the photography we‘d be doing, but didn’t know that the newspaper came along with it. Math is an okay subject for him, but likes the minimum days where all classes are shortened.
As for food, his favorite dish is Fettuccini Alfredo, and he likes to have olives on his cheese pizza. Other favorite food/drinks are Cherry Pepsi, Barbeque Lays, and pancakes, along with a healthier snack, strawberries.
Finally, Anup is a bit of an animal person since he has two parakeets, Mojo and Coco. He prefers dogs over cats, and believes that mosquitoes are one of the most peskiest animals ever. “There are so many in India, because of heat and humidity. You’ll have bites on your skin, just after a day outside.”

Celine Beddard By: Krista Yang

Celine Beddard was born on Feb. 19, 1998 in Sacramento, CA. Her siblings, two brothers and three sisters, are all older than her. She has four cats, three dogs, and three goldfish. Outside of school, Celine plays volleyball, swims, and ice skates. She also enjoys acting and singing. She can speak Spanish, as well as some French. Her favorite color is purple.

This will be Celine’s second year here, at Churchill. Overall, she likes being in the IB program, though she feels that there is too much homework and finds it stressful at times. She is excited to work on the yearbook, but is not as thrilled to be working on the newspaper. Before coming to Churchill, Celine attended Cambridge Heights. Next year, she will be going to Mira Loma, and later, she hopes to go to Stanford.

Daniel Rubinstein

Daniel Rubinstein is a seventh grade I.B. (international baccalaureate) student here at Churchill.  He is 12 years old as of today, September 8th.  He was born here in Sacramento at Mercy Hospital.  Daniel is any only child and he likes it that way!  He enjoys being in the I.B. program because of the advanced classes, but he believes that out homework should be more enjoyable.  Before coming to Churchill he attended school at Starr King, Billy Mitchell, and Kenneth.  Daniel likes to read fiction and realistic-fiction books outside of school in his free time.  Although he is an avid reader he doesn’t have a favorite book.  I believe Daniel Rubinstein is a great addition to the Newspaper/Yearbook team!!

Solomiya Gumenyuk, As Told by Krista Keplinger

After looking at my green cast on my lower leg, Solomiya told me about how she broke her arm by riding into a fence, and had a lime green cast just like mine.
“Yeah. I have to have my cast for ZERO days now!” I said enthusiastically, “But how did you ride into a fence of all things?”
She beams a smile with metallic braces.
“How much longer do you have to have your braces?” I questioned.
“Oh, another 1 to 2 years. I eat pretty much everything that you’re not supposed to, so probably 2 years.”
Her glasses slip down her nose while she’s laughing and she pushes them back up. I just notice then that she has a combination of blue, green, and a gold/hazel color all in her large irises. We chat about Bones, our favorite TV show for the both of us (sort of), and how we will only take beets in the form of borscht.
I tell her about my favorite books, which she’s never heard of, and Solomiya tells me about her favorite movie, “The Brothers Bloom,” which I’ve never heard of.
“Are you a Pepsi or Coke fan?”
“Neither. I looooove Doctor Pepper! And Converse!” Solomiya exclaims definitively. She tells me about her four siblings (yes, FOUR) and how her parents emigrated from the Ukraine to America. Three of her siblings are older than her but one sister is younger.
Solomiya also enjoys some privacy and a good book, along with mango and the Ukrainian version of tortellini.
All in all, I learned the Solomiya is a girl with plenty of spunk to go around and likes to talk a lot once you break the ice with her. AND she is very nice. She prefers milk chocolate over dark chocolate because she thinks it’s less bitter and has no idea where she wants to go to college but wants to live in San Diego.

Brittany Hoang by Manu Prakasam

The unlikely combination of ice-skating and reading makes up Brittany Hoang’s life. Born on March 20, 1998 at Sutter Memorial Hospital to a Vietnamese family, Brittany loves her family of 5 and her life.
Brittany, a self-proclaimed perfectionist, is currently in her second year of the I.B. program. She likes I.B. for its people, curriculum, and wide array of class choices. Her favorite classes this year are Journalism, since she loves to write, and Japanese. Although those are her two favorite classes, she feels she is doing the best in science.
Her other favorites include Yu-na Kim as her favorite athlete, turquoise as her favorite color and mint chocolate chip as an ice cream. Brittany doesn’t have a favorite band though, or a favorite food.
Outside of school, as I stated before, Brittany is a phenomenal skater (she can even jerk on ice!). Her friends call her the next Kristi Yamaguchi, which she rejects immediately. She goes to San Francisco every Saturday at 4 AM (!). This just shows her amazing dedication. This hard work has paid off as she has won so many skating competitions that she has lost count.
Brittany, in her little free time, also loves to read. If you see her at any given time, she will probably be reading, skating, or doing homework. Brittany has a number of favorite books and cannot name all of them without a lot of time and thought.
Even though she has an organized, structured life, Brittany hasn’t mapped out her future and isn’t sure where she wants to go to college or what she wants to do later on. For now though, Brittany will stick with reading and ice-skating.

Thirteen-year-old Emily Grichuhin enjoys playing soccer, riding her bike, and swimming in the hot summer.  She used to play the piano as well and likes the Internet. Emily is 5’6’’ and enjoys eating pasta, as well as shopping at American Eagle for her clothes. When it comes to books, she enjoys sitting down and reading a good fiction novel. When she’s not reading a book or playing sports, she likes listening to Justin Bieber’s music. Apart from that, she has blue eyes and her favorite color is purple. She prefers mechanical pencils to wooden pencils and has a mother, a father, and two brothers. Like many people, she dislikes random advertisements popping up on websites and thinks they are annoying and ruin your experience on the Internet. Another thing she does not like is the smell of farms. She thinks the farm animals, like the cows and pigs, smell horrible.
